Bangkok: The City of Angels

The day that you arrive is pretty much wasted between a long flight, transfer, check in, money exchange and eating something I only had time to walk around Rambuttri Street and relax at the roof top pool at the Hotel.

So on the next day, I visited the 3 major sites: Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and Wat Arun.

I read that you should arrive early to the Grand Palace, but I fell asleep and arrive around 11. It wasn’t a problem to get in but it was a lot of people there. Fortunately the big tour groups were already leaving.

Thailand temples:

When visiting the temple you need to dress appropriately. That means no revealing clothes, no short skirts no shorts. I had read that if you aren’t prepared you could rent some clothes with them. That’s not true.

I tried to enter with a top but covered with a scarf but they didn’t let me and take me to the shop to buy a t-shirt… They didn’t have the renting option only buying. They only have to types of T-shirts one with colourful elephants (the one that I bought) and a all green shirt. The t-shirt cost me 200 Bahts (5€).

I saw a lot of people that had the same problem than me, and a lot of people needed to buy the elephant pants as well.

I still covered with my scarf for the photos but it was really hot.

The inside of the Grand Palace is a bit confusing even with the map. I entered to the Emerald Buddha site first and was a little lost to find the Grand Palace because the indications say Exit and I thought they were together. So don’t worry just follow the exit signs and head to the Grand Palace.

I spent there around 2 hours and headed to the next location:

Wat Pho, The reclining Buddha

At the door it was a man that seemed like a worker and tried to take us to a different temple. This is common in Bangkok, It’s a Scam. Happened to me just once. You should just ignore and enter.

Important Tip:

  • At the Wat Pho you need to have exact change! The ticket cost 100 Bahts (2,67€) per person and took me around one hour to see it.
  • At the temples you need to take your shoes off. They have a rack where you can leave them, but I took a bag with me and kept them inside my backpack. I wasn’t very comfortable to leave my sneakers outside with so many people visiting.

Inside the Wat Pho you have a lot of stalls that you can eat, but I had researched a few nice restaurants just outside the temple.

Where to Eat

On my list were The Sixth and Home Café Tha Tien, just near the Tha Tien pier.

The first was full and I went to the Home Café. I had my favourite dish of all my trip. I ate the Pad See Ew and it was amazing. The best part you end up paying around 6€ per person.

The next stop was:

Wat Arun

I took the public boat that makes the transfer from Tha Tien pier to Wat Arun directly. It only cost me 5 Bahts (0,13€).

The Wat Arun has a free part that you can still have a look to the temple if you don’t want to pay. I paid the visit and once again put my new shirt on.

The visit cost 50 Bahts (1,33€). It is an outside visit and you can take some great photos. I spent there between the free and paid part around 1 hour.

After that I took the boat and walked back to the Hotel.
