Lanzarote: The volcanic wonders

If you’re looking for more than a beach destination you have the best of both worlds here in Lanzarote.

The attractions

I visited 3 main attractions on the morning.

I drove all the way up the island and begin with a visit to the famous Mirador del Río- an amazing view point to Graciosa Island located at 475 meter high, it’s one of the best creations of César Manrique.

I continued my way to Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes.

Jameos del Agua is a series of lava caves with a tourist, cultural and art centre created by local artist and architect César Manrique. This was one of my favoutive attractions in Lanzarote.

Jameos del agua and Cueva de los Verdes are located inside the lava tunnels.

Arrieta Village

After visiting all this sites I went for lunch at a small fisherman’s village named Arrieta. You can try the great seafood and fish of the island right in front of the sea.

On the next day I visited one of the main attractions of the island completing my combined ticket: Las Montañas de Fuego de Timanfaya.

Timanfaya

This geological site can get very crowded so I decided to visit first the Interpretation Centre of Mancha Blanca (free of charge) that gave us an idea and an introduction of the volcanism in Lanzarote.

When you get to Timanfaya people are divided into groups and escorted to the tour buses of the site. This is mandatory and included in the fee. No one can walk or take their own vehicles here.

This is an amazing experience! The tour takes you around the volcanos and in the end they show you a geyser and how they cook the meals that are served in the restaurant, with the heat from the volcano.

On the way back to Playa Blanca I passed  El Golfo and Lago Verde: El Golfo is a half-submerged volcano and at the foot is Lago Verde, a half-moon green lagoon covered with minerals and micro-organisms.

You can also find nearby the cliffs Los Hervideros and the Salt Mines Janubio.
